Artists in the Country: Three Generations of Americans at Giverny
Artists in the Country: Three Generations of Americans at Giverny
Artists had worked in the Normandy village of Giverny since the early nineteenth century, but between 1887 and World War I, it blossomed as an international art colony thanks largely to a flood of American artists. Three successive waves of arrivals each pictured the village, its surroundings, and the rural life it supported in distinctive ways that illustrate the evolution of Impressionism in American art. This lecture examines the colorful work and the lives of the Americans in Giverny over a quarter century.
Dr. Greenhouse is a Chicago-based art historian specializing in American art of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. She received her BA in History from Yale University, an MS in Library and Information Science from Simmons College, and her PhD in the History of Art from Yale.
Social time at the Peoria Riverfront Museum begins at 9:30 am with the lecture from 10:00-11:00 am. Everyone is welcome.
Tickets at the door: Adults: $12 / Students $5

NIGHTS IN THE GARDENS OF SPAIN
NIGHTS IN THE GARDENS OF SPAIN
The Peoria Symphony Orchestra (PSO) 119th season of exceptional concerts continues on Saturday, March 11, 2017, 8:00 pm in the Peoria Civic Center Theater with NIGHTS IN THE GARDENS OF SPAIN. This concert presents an intriguing program of Spanish influenced music featuring two enthralling piano concertos. Nights in the Gardens of Spain by composer Manuel de Falla, considered the "musical soul of Spain" is a moody and remarkable look at his homeland depicting three enchanted gardens. It is a pure flight of fancy, rich, dark, and mysterious at the crossroads of East and West.
Master pianist Jorge Federico Osorio returns to the PSO for both the de Falla and Ravel's Concerto for Piano Left Hand. Commissioned by Paul Wittgenstein, a concert pianist who lost his right arm in the First World War, Concerto for Piano Left Hand unfolds in a single movement that falls into three sections in an impressive feat of musical skill and illusion. One of the most virtuous of the virtuoso pianist of our time in the tradition of Serkin, Schnabel, and Horowitz. I am so happy he is with us for this concert George Stelluto, PSO Music Director
The second half of the concert features Turina's magical Danses Fantasticas and de Falla's Three Cornered Hat, a tale of love and intrigue that can only be told through the evocative language of Spanish music.
Tickets for the PSO's NIGHTS IN THE GARDENS OF SPAIN start at $31 and student tickets are $11. Tickets are available online at www.peoriasymphony.org, calling 309.671.1096 or coming to the PSO Box Office located at 101 State Street, Peoria, IL. Box Office hours are 10:00 am - 4:00 pm Monday through Friday.
The concert is sponsored by Soderstrom Skin Institute and Heights Finance Corporation with additional support from PNC and the Ruby K. Worner Trust. Interviews are available.
